Bought a car in Poland: what to check in the OC policy right away
Buying a car in Poland looks simple until the insurance questions start. New owners often get confused about whether the old policy still works, whether a new one is required and when the insurer can recalculate the premium after the ownership change.
Does the old OC transfer to the buyer
Yes, in most cases the active OC policy transfers with the car for the remaining period. But that does not mean you should ignore it. After the ownership change, the insurer may reassess the risk and change the premium if your profile differs from the previous owner.
Why keeping the old policy is not always the best option
Sometimes the inherited policy is fine to keep until expiry. In other cases it makes sense to compare the market again immediately, especially if the previous conditions were built for a very different driver profile. A fresh comparison may produce a more suitable structure of protection or clearer pricing.
What to verify immediately after purchase
Make sure you have proof of active OC, correct vehicle and seller data, and a clear understanding of when the policy ends. If the vehicle was uninsured or the documents are unclear, do not delay. In Poland penalties for gaps in mandatory OC appear quickly.
When to consider AC or Assistance as well
If the car is more valuable, recently imported, used for longer trips or you simply want a calmer first year, it is worth checking AC, Assistance and NNW together with OC. Then you compare a working protection package rather than only the cheapest mandatory policy.
If you want, send us the vehicle details and purchase date. We can quickly tell you whether it makes sense to keep the current cover, recalculate it or add options that actually matter for your case.
